Mom… We Won’t Be Back for Dinner
Mom… We Won’t Be Back for Dinner is an original mixed media painting built around a playful story of childhood adventure, escape and imagination.
Two children appear to be preparing for an unexpected journey. The little boy moves on all fours along the street while the girl carefully stands on his back, using him to reach an old-fashioned telephone booth. She has picked up the phone — but who is she calling?
Perhaps they have run away from home.
Behind them, old suitcases and a globe suggest that this isn’t simply an afternoon adventure. They seem ready to leave, although where they are going — and whether they will actually get there — remains completely open to interpretation.
The title, Mom… We Won’t Be Back for Dinner, adds another layer to the story. It sounds like the beginning of a childhood adventure that has suddenly become much bigger than expected.
This mixed media painting combines acrylic paint with additional materials and three-dimensional elements applied directly to the canvas. The paper airplanes project outward from the surface, creating a playful pop-up effect and making the imaginary journey literally extend beyond the painted world.
The background is rich with colour, layers and subtle tonal variations. Decorative golden details add another dimension to the composition, catching the light and contrasting with the colourful painted surface.
The combination of painted imagery and physical elements gives the artwork an almost theatrical quality. The viewer is not simply looking at a scene — they are looking into a small world that seems ready to continue beyond the edges of the canvas.
At the centre of the story is the relationship between the two children. Their improvised teamwork, the telephone call and the luggage behind them suggest excitement, complicity and the freedom of childhood imagination.
The artwork can be read literally as two children escaping on an adventure, or more symbolically as a celebration of the moment when imagination turns an ordinary day into an extraordinary journey.
With its 60 × 80 cm portrait format, Mom… We Won’t Be Back for Dinner makes a distinctive statement piece for a living room, child’s room, creative studio, hallway or eclectic interior.
